Room 42 is a program unlike anything else out there. The original idea behind Room 42 was to shine a light on research and the people doing the work. We wanted to build a bridge between academia and practitioners in technical and professional communications.
We’ve all attended and presented at countless conferences and one thing we noticed was the amazing conversations that happened between sessions. Conversations that ignited inspiration and answered tough to solve challenges. Conversations that would stay with us long after the conference. These conversations shaped our thinking and elevated our awareness.
What if we could create a way to support more of these conversations? What if we could also create an opportunity to illuminate valuable research that may have gotten overlooked? What if we could create a way to connect academia with practitioners?
This was the seed for the experiment that was to be called Room 42 and half way through our first season, we could tell the response was overwhelmingly positive. Shortly after we began the program we were able to start connecting researchers with key investigators and even built a collaboration or two between academic scholars.
Room 42 is expanding to include a practitioner focused conversation nicknamed The Green Room. We also plan on expanding to include a program that will be a deep dive into some of the more pressing and challenging issues facing Technical and Professional Communicators (TPC). Our goal is to continue to bring practitioners and academics together to share knowledge about breaking research while keeping the programs accessible, free, and open to the public. This can all be made possible with donations from the public. TC Camp is a 501(3)c non-profit so your donation is tax deductible.
Designed to be virtual
We have years of experience hosting events. TC Camp was an in person event and we had been successfully running those from 2013. But the logistics of in person events are burdensome and very limiting for the attendees. It is hard for many people to travel and there are a great deal of additional costs associated with it even though attendance to TC Camp was free. So when we were contemplating Room 42 we knew we wanted to address accessibility first and foremost and the best way to do that was to create Room 42 in a virtual platform.
The Rooms of Room 42
Our current programing has two rooms. One is the cornerstone, the conversations we have with researchers, authors, and academics. Each episode features a unique article. The second is the soon to be launched Green Room where we will engage on topics that are of keen interest from the practitioners perspective.
We invite academics, researchers, and authors to come and share their work. Rather than have them do a traditional presentation, we engage in a candid conversation about the work focusing on the practical application. We designed it to resemble a casual talk show which gives the researchers a unique opportunity to discuss their work rather than present their findings. We cover key points and uncover key findings but we also gain insight into the “behind the scenes” wisdom. You never know where the conversation will go and what new insights will be revealed.
We are getting ready to launch a pilot program. This one will be a little different twist to the candid discussions of the regular Room 42. The Green Room will be like a massive Town Hall, everyone can enter the room with a hot mic and live camera. We are hoping it will be a meeting place for practitioners to join in active conversations about topics of most interest. Topics that are top of mind or of more importance that can answer pressing questions.

Our Reach is Growing!
One of the biggest reasons we were excited to create a virtual program was that it would be more accessible for people here and around the globe. While the live sessions happen in Pacific time, thanks to technology, it can be replayed anywhere there is internet connectivity. So what started in a town off of the Pacific coast then expanded to the East coast, is now global and growing!
Why did we name it Room 42?
Room as a nod to the researchers and academics who are shaping young minds and guiding the future of our industry from the pulpit of higher education. 42 because everyone knows that 42 is “The Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything” (Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy).
